What the assessment involves
Most adult assessments use a structured diagnostic interview mapped to DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria, supported by rating scales completed by you and, where possible, an informant who knew you in childhood. Expect questions about school, work history, relationships, sleep, driving and substance use. The clinician is testing for lifelong, cross-setting impairment, not recent difficulty.
A defensible assessment also screens for the conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD: anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorder and autism. A provider that never raises differential diagnosis is cutting a corner that matters.

Missing childhood evidence does not disqualify you. Clinicians work with retrospective self-report routinely, but corroboration shortens the process.
After diagnosis
Diagnosis is the start of the pathway, not the end. If you want medication, you need titration, which means an independent prescriber or psychiatrist, baseline physical checks, and a monitoring schedule. Ask whether your provider does this in-house before you choose them.
Non-medication support, including psychoeducation, coaching and workplace adjustment letters, varies enormously by provider and is rarely advertised clearly. Ask what is included.
