Right to Choose work for clinicians
The rate is the easy part. Caseload structure, supervision and indemnity determine whether the work is sustainable.
Right to Choose providers hire assessors, independent prescribers, consultant psychiatrists and supervising clinicians, mostly on sessional or fixed-caseload terms. Indicative 2026 rates run £70 to £120 per hour for assessment and £90 to £160 for prescribing and supervision, depending on grade, autonomy and caseload structure.

Questions to ask before you accept
How many assessments per session, and is report writing inside or outside that time?
Who supervises me, how often, and is supervision paid?
Is the caseload retained or discharged, and what happens to my list if I reduce sessions?
Who carries indemnity for this work, and does my existing cover extend to it?
What is the escalation route for a complex or high-risk presentation?
The first question exposes most bad contracts. An advertised hourly rate with report writing excluded can be a third lower in practice than a slightly smaller rate with writing included.
Where the demand is
Assessment capacity is now reasonably well supplied in adult ADHD. Prescribing, supervision and children's pathways are not, and that is where rates and flexibility are strongest. Clinicians with independent prescribing qualifications and specialist experience are the scarcest group in the market.
How Scale Health works with clinicians
We brief mandates honestly, including the parts a job advert leaves out: real caseload, real supervision, real escalation. Credentialing, DBS, indemnity and right-to-work are completed before you start, so day one is clinical rather than administrative.
Common questions
- What do Right to Choose assessors get paid?
- Indicatively £70 to £110 per hour in 2026 depending on discipline, autonomy and whether report writing sits inside the paid session. Always confirm what the rate includes.
- Is this work inside or outside IR35?
- It varies by engagement. Sessional contractor work is often outside, employed and salaried roles are inside by definition. Ask for the determination in writing before you start.
- Do I need my own indemnity?
- Usually yes, and you should confirm in writing that your cover extends to remote assessment and to the specific provider arrangement before your first clinic.
