The Medical Director profile scale-ups keep getting wrong

Clinical credibility alone will not carry a growth-stage health business. Neither will commercial instinct without a licence to practise behind it.

Short answer

Growth-stage health businesses tend to hire a Medical Director from one of two extremes: a senior consultant with unimpeachable clinical standing and no operating experience, or a commercially fluent clinician who has been out of practice long enough to lose the room.

The profile that works sits between them. Currently practising or recently practising, comfortable owning a P&L conversation, and willing to say no to a growth plan that the clinical model cannot support.

Assess for that last trait explicitly. Ask candidates to describe a time they blocked a commercial decision. If they cannot, you are hiring a signature, not a safeguard.
